Terms of Use

Last updated and effective: September 28, 2026

These terms cover your use of Rootle, an app made by The Burrow Co ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use Rootle. These terms are governed by California law, and the California-specific notices are collected under California consumer notices.

The app

Rootle helps you log food, weight, and body measurements, and estimates nutrition from photos, typed descriptions, dictation, or barcodes using AI and public food databases. It can also show AI-generated observations about your eating patterns, and optionally sync weight and nutrition data with Apple Health or Health Connect.

Not medical advice

Rootle is a tracking tool, not a healthcare service. Nothing in the app — calorie targets, macro splits, AI estimates, or insights — is medical, nutritional, or dietary advice, and none of it is reviewed by a clinician.

Always use your own judgment, and talk to a qualified professional before making significant changes to your diet — especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, take medication, or have a history of disordered eating. Never rely on Rootle to identify allergens: AI estimates and database entries can miss or misidentify ingredients, and the consequences of that are yours to guard against. If you are struggling with your relationship to food, please reach out to your doctor or another qualified professional rather than to a calorie app. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Who can use Rootle

You must be at least 18 years old to use Rootle. Its calorie targets and weight-loss pacing are designed for adults, not for people who are still growing. By using the app you confirm you are 18 or older.

Your account

Your content

Everything you log — your entries, photos, descriptions, weights, and measurements — stays yours. We don't claim ownership of it. You give us only the permission we need to actually run the app for you: to store your data in your account, display it back to you, and pass photos and descriptions to our AI estimation service so it can return a result. That permission ends when you delete the content or your account. We don't use your content to train AI models, and we don't publish it or share it with other users. See the Privacy Policy for the details, including what happens to photos (they aren't stored).

Acceptable use

Don't:

We may suspend or terminate accounts that break these rules, that abuse the AI estimation endpoints, or where we're required to by law. Where it's reasonable to do so, we'll tell you why.

AI usage limits

Using Rootle requires a Rootle Premium subscription or a free trial. AI estimates cost us money per request, so each subscriber has a daily allowance of text, photo and nutrition estimates and a monthly allowance, both far above what normal logging needs. When you reach one, the app tells you when AI estimates come back; you can keep logging from the food database, your saved foods, or by entering calories yourself in the meantime. We may change these limits as costs and usage change; if we reduce what a paid subscription includes in a way that matters, we'll tell you before it takes effect so you can cancel. Database and barcode lookups don't count against your allowance.

Rootle Premium (subscriptions)

Automatic renewal terms. Rootle Premium renews automatically and continues until you cancel. You'll be charged the monthly or annual price shown in the app when you subscribe, once per period, until you cancel. There is no minimum commitment and no cancellation fee. You can cancel online at any time in your Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you've already paid for.

These terms are given to meet California's Automatic Renewal Law (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 17600 and following). In more detail:

Apple App Store

If you downloaded Rootle from the App Store, the following also applies:

Google Play

If you downloaded Rootle from Google Play, your use is also subject to the Google Play Terms of Service, and purchases are subject to Google's payment and refund policies. Google is not a party to these terms and is not responsible for Rootle.

Changes to the service

We may add, change, or remove features as the app evolves, and we may suspend the service for maintenance. If we discontinue Rootle entirely, we'll give you reasonable notice and a chance to export your data, and we'll stop billing active subscriptions.

Our intellectual property

The app itself — its software, design, branding, and content other than yours — belongs to us and our licensors. These terms give you permission to use Rootle, not any ownership of it. Nutrition data drawn from Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central belongs to those projects and is used under their terms.

Disclaimer

Rootle is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. Nutrition estimates — whether from AI, a barcode lookup, or a food database — can be inaccurate, sometimes significantly so. We don't warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that your data will always be available, though we do take reasonable care.

Nothing in this section limits rights you have under California law that can't be waived by contract, including under the Consumers Legal Remedies Act (Cal. Civ. Code § 1750 and following).

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, The Burrow Co will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising out of or relating to your use of Rootle — including any health outcome or decision you make based on an estimate the app produced.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for all claims relating to Rootle is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for Rootle in the twelve months before the claim arose, or (b) fifty US dollars.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for fraud, willful injury to a person or property, gross negligence, or violation of law, which California law (including Cal. Civ. Code § 1668) does not allow a contract to exclude, or for anything else that can't be limited under California law.

Governing law and disputes

These terms, and any dispute about them or about Rootle, are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. If we can't resolve a dispute informally, it will be brought in the state or federal courts located in California, and you and we consent to their personal jurisdiction. Either of us can instead bring a claim in small claims court in California if it qualifies. There is no arbitration requirement and no class-action waiver in these terms.

Before filing anything, please email us. Most problems are a misunderstanding or a bug, and we'd much rather fix it than argue about it.

California consumer notices

Under Cal. Civ. Code § 1789.3, California users are entitled to the following consumer rights notice. Rootle is provided by The Burrow Co, reachable at support@theburrow.co. Rootle requires a Rootle Premium subscription after any free trial; its price is shown in the app before you subscribe, and billing is described above. If you have a question or complaint, please email us first. You may also contact the Complaint Assistance Unit of the Division of Consumer Services of the California Department of Consumer Affairs in writing at 1625 North Market Blvd., Suite N 112, Sacramento, CA 95834, or by telephone at (800) 952-5210.

How we handle your personal information, and your rights over it under the California Consumer Privacy Act, are set out in the Privacy Policy.

General

Changes

We may update these terms as the app evolves. We'll change the date above, and for material changes we'll give notice in the app before they take effect. Continued use after a change takes effect means you accept the update; if you don't, stop using Rootle and delete your account. A change never applies to a dispute that arose before it took effect.
